Frequently Asked Questions
What is the process for moving into an assisted living facility?
Start with a tour of the program, discuss the costs and pick out an apartment.
The next step will be to have a Nursing assessment. The Nurse will review and discuss your
medical history and functional needs. This state-required assessment is free and will help us
determine if you qualify for assisted living.
Once you qualify, the Nurse will develop a personalized care/service plan that meets your
specific needs. Your level of care/service can change and at any time, to suit your individual
needs, should they change.
You will then be able to move in with your belongings, and personalize your apartment to
your liking. Fortunately, we provide the refrigerator/freezer, microwave, and window blinds. In addition, our maintenance staff will hang everything for you including your window
treatments.
Your Lifestyle Coordinator performs a social history so we may get to know you and ensure
we have activities/outings each month that you enjoy. Regular events and outings help
develop a sense of community and social connections. We encourage you to join these
activities. It’s easy to acclimate to your new home and community.
Do I have to be ill or disabled to live at EKLC?
The answer is No. Independent living means you care for yourself. However, staff are allowed to respond to emergencies, so we provide you with an emergency button if you desire. We are a senior living community, therefore, we serve 55 and older adults.
In assisted living, you also do Not have to be ill or disabled. Just 55 years old or older. We offer a level of care for people that don't need many services from us. You will still have nursing assessments periodically, as required by law, and we provide 3 meals a day, housekeeping and linen laundry as part of your rent. We charge ala carte for temporary nursing and care giving services you may need. If you are ill or have a chronic medical condition, we offer 3 other levels of care to meet your needs.
What does the process of moving into an assisted living program entail?
Start with a tour of the program, discuss the costs and pick out an apt. Next step will be to have a Nursing assessment (no charge & good for 30 days in Iowa) that takes approx. 1 hour to complete either in your home or at the facility.
The Nurse will discuss your medical history, prescription and over the counter medications/supplements/creams/drops, etc. you take or use. You will also be asked questions regarding your ability to perform common daily tasks, such as bathing, dressing, and grooming. The Nurse will also perform a mini mental exam, a series of questions & writing, to establish your baseline cognitive level. The Nurse will ask you to sign a release to obtain a year or two of your medical records. This helps the Nurse in determining if you qualify for assisted living, which is required in a state certified and inspected program like ours. After obtaining your medical records the Program Team will meet to determine if you qualify. You will then be contacted.
If you qualify and you accept, the Nurse will develop a personalized care/service plan that meets YOUR needs individually. This care plan can change at any time and you are charged based on your level of care/service and the size of your apartment. After you move in, with your personal belongings and furniture (program provides refrigerator/freezer, microwave, blinds in the windows), the Lifestyle Coordinator performs a social history with you to get to know you and ensure we have activities/outings each month that you enjoy.
Settle in, get to know the staff, and ask when you need help. We are here to serve you! You steer the ship! WELCOME TO EKLC! It is our privilege to serve you!
